Prednisolone Acetate Information:

What is prednisolone acetate?

Prednisolone is a corticosteroid used to treat a variety of inflammatory and auto-immune conditions. Prednisolone acetate is a form of prednisolone that is used to treat ophthalmic conditions or eye problems that are related to inflammation or auto-immune disease. Some of these conditions include allergic conjunctivitis, iritis, and cyclitis. It works by inhibiting the production of arachidonic acid which is necessary to produce enzymes that cause inflammation. Corticosteroids also slow down the cell proliferation and turnover that is common with autoimmune conditions such as allergic reaction.

How do I take prednisolone acetate?

To use prednisolone acetate, wash your hands and shake the bottle well before each application. If using contact lenses, remove them first. Tilt your head back and pull down your lower eyelid with a finger to form a pocket. Then drop your prescribed dosage into the pocket. Do not touch your eye with the dropper. Close your eyes and apply pressure to the inside corner of the eye or tear duct you treated. Keep your eyes closed and don’t blink for 1-2 minutes to allow the medication to be absorbed by the eye. Dry off any medication on your face with a tissue and wash your hands after each application.

Before taking prednisolone acetate, tell your doctor if:

  • You have an allergic reaction to prednisolone or any other corticosteroids.
  • You have a viral or bacterial infection of the eye.
  • You have thinning eye tissues or you have had glaucoma, cataracts, or nerve damage in the eye.
  • You use contact lenses.
  • You have diabetes.
  • You are using any other eye treatments or medications.

What are the possible side effects of taking prednisolone acetate?

Possible side effects from using prednisolone acetate include temporary, mild burning or stinging at the site of application, and blurred vision after applying medication. If you experience eye pain, signs of infection, eye irritation, severe headache, changes in vision, or seeing halos around lights, discontinue use and contact your doctor at once.

What if I forget to take a dose of prednisolone acetate?

If you miss a dose of prednisolone acetate, apply the missed dose as soon as you remember it. If it’s near time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not apply two doses at once or two consecutive doses to make up for a missed one.

How do I store prednisolone acetate?

Store prednisolone acetate tightly closed in its container in a cool, dry place between 46 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit in an upright position.

What happens if I overdose on prednisolone acetate?

It is not likely to overdose on ophthalmic prednisolone acetate. If you think you have used too much at once, contact your eye doctor. If you or someone you know has accidently ingested prednisolone acetate, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.

Warnings
