Zymar Information:
What is Zymar?
Zymar is the drug gatifloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic in an ophthalmic solution prescribed to treat bacterial conjunctivitis (sometimes called “pink eye”). It works by killing the bacteria that cause the infection.
How do I use Zymar?
Zymar is dispensed as an ophthalmic solution that is applied topically to an eye infected with bacterial conjunctivitis. The usual dosing pattern is every two hours, while awake, for two days, then two to four times a day for five days after that. Continue using this medication for the duration of the prescription; discontinuing its use too soon can result in reinfection. If this is the first time using Zymar, have your doctor demonstrate the proper technique. Never allow the dropper tip to touch anything; wash your hands thoroughly after administering the medication.
Before using Zymar, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to gatifloxacin, other quinolone antibiotics, or any of the ingredients in the Zymar drug
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are taking anticoagulants, theophylline, or cyclosporine
- You wear contact lenses
- You consume caffeinated beverages
What are the possible side effects of taking Zymar?
Possible side effects of Zymar include blurred vision, eye irritation or pain, headache, swollen eyelids, or an unpleasant taste in the mouth. If any of these conditions persist or intensify, contact your healthcare provider.
What if I forget to take a dose of Zymar?
If you forget your scheduled application of Zymar, use it as soon as you remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the amount used or change the regimen to make up for one that was missed.
How do I store Zymar?
Keep Zymar in a tightly sealed container, out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused or expired medication according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Zymar?
Zymar is for external use only. If it is accidentally ingested, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 to find out what to do. Go to the nearest emergency room if the person who ingested the medication is having a severe adverse reaction.
Warnings
Call your doctor if you become pregnant while using Zymar. This medication is for external use only. Bacterial conjunctivitis is easily spread; thorough handwashing is needed after touching the infected eye. Do not wear contact lenses while using Zymar. Once the infection has cleared replace makeup, contact lenses, and any products that came in contact with the affected eye.
