Breo Ellipta Information:

What is Breo Ellipta?

Breo Ellipta is an inhaled powder combining the corticosteroid fluticasone with the bronchodilator vilanterol. Fluticasone prevents certain inflammatory substances from being released into the body; vilanterol relaxes airway muscles to improve breathing.  It is prescribed to treat COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), chronic bronchitis, and emphysema, as well as asthma in patients who are not responding to other long-term asthma treatments.

How do I take Breo Ellipta?

Breo Ellipta is a medication in powder form that is inhaled using a special inhaler, and administration is usually once a day. Before taking this medication the first time, ask your healthcare provider for instruction and assistance in loading and using the inhaler. After removing a new inhaler, fill the “Tray opened” and “Discard” labels with the appropriate information. When ready to use the inhaler, slide the cover down until it clicks, exhale away from the mouthpiece, and then place the mouthpiece between your lips. Inhale in a long, steady breath through your mouth (do not inhale through your nose), remove the inhaler, and hold your breath for three or four seconds. Exhale slowly. Clean and close the mouthpiece with a dry tissue; you may rinse your mouth with water, but do not swallow.

Before taking Breo Ellipta, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to fluticasone, vilanterol, milk proteins, or any of the ingredients in the Breo Ellipta medication
  • You are using long-acting beta agents (LABA)
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You are taking, or have recently stopped taking, beta-blockers, conivaptan, HIV protease inhibitors, metronidazole, MAOIs, or anti-depressants
  • You are taking medications to treat COPD
  • You are taking nefazodone, antifungals, clarithromycin, telithromycin, diuretics, or troleandomycin
  • You, or a family member has ever had osteoporosis
  • You have, or have had, hypertension, heart disease, heart attack, arrhythmia, hyperthyroidism, or liver disease
  • You have, or have had, seizures, diabetes, glaucoma, cataracts, tuberculosis, or conditions that affect you immune system
  • You have never had measles or chicken pox, or have never been vaccinated against these diseases

What are the possible side effects of taking Breo Ellipta?

Some individuals have reported side effects after taking Breo Ellipta. Less severe side effects include joint pain, headache, sore throat, nervousness, runny nose, or body tremors. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor for assistance.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (hives, rash, itching, swelling of the face, throat, lips, or tongue), accelerated heart rate, arrhythmia, chest pain, coughing, blurry vision, white patches in the throat or mouth, fever, changes in sputum color, chest tightness after inhalation, and wheezing.

What if I forget to take a dose of Breo Ellipta?

If you forget the scheduled inhalation of this Breo Ellipta, take it as soon as you remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular routine. Do take multiple inhalations to make up for the one missed.

How do I store Breo Ellipta?

Keep Breo Ellipta tightly sealed in its original packaging until ready to use, away from the extremes of temperature and humidity and out of the reach of children. Dispose of the inhaler six weeks after removing it from its foil packaging, or once the dosage indicator reads “0”, according to the instructions of a pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on Breo Ellipta?

In the event of an overdose of Breo Ellipta, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual shows signs of an overdose (chest pain, sleep problems, dizziness, dry mouth, excessive fatigue, tachycardia or arrhythmia, headache, weak or cramping muscles, nausea, nervousness, seizures, body tremors, or shortness of breath), stops breathing, or loses consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.

Warnings

This medication may increase the risk of death and the number and severity of asthma attacks in those who have asthma. Do not use Breo Ellipta during a sudden or acute COPD or asthma attack. Opening and closing the inhaler without taking a dose still discharges a dose each time this happens. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while using this medication.
