Lescol Xl Information:
What is Lescol XL?
Lescol (fluvastatin) is a cholesterol-lowering medication known as an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor, or a statin. Lescol XL is the extended-release version of this medication. It works by slowing the production of low-density lipoprotein (LDL, or "bad" cholesterol), which can build up along the walls of the arteries, slowing blood flow to the heart and brain and increasing your risk of angina, heart attack, and stroke. Lescol XL also increases your high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or "good" cholesterol). In most cases, Lescol XL is used in combination with diet and exercise to improve the health of overweight or obese adults. However, it may also be used in children from 10 to 17 years of age to treat a genetic disorder that hurts the body's ability to break down cholesterol the way it's supposed to (familial heterozygous hypercholesterolemia).
How do I take Lescol XL?
Always take your medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. You may need to take Lescol XL long-term to keep your cholesterol under control. As an extended-release drug, Lescol XL is taken one time daily by mouth, with or without food. Never open, cut, crush, chew, or break your Lescol XL tablets, as your medication will not be released into your bloodstream correctly.
Before taking Lescol XL, tell your doctor if:
- You are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant or breastfeed
- You have or have a history of kidney or liver disease
- You have diabetes
- You have or have a history of thyroid disease or disorder
- You regularly drink two or more alcoholic beverages daily or you are an alcoholic
- You cannot, for any reason, keep to a regular diet and exercise plan
- You are taking any other drugs, medicines, vitamins, or supplements, especially: antacids especially Zantac or Prilosec, antiandrogens, anti-rejection or immunosuppressant drugs, blood thinners, cancer medication, cimetidine, diuretic, erythromycin, fenofibrate or fenofibric acid, fluconazole, gemfibrozil, niacin or drugs/supplements containing niacin, other statins
- You are taking cholestyramine or colestipol, as you may need special instructions
What are the possible side effects of taking Lescol XL?
Some side effects of this medication are severe and require immediate medical attention. These include: allergic reaction (hives, inability to breathe, swelling in the face and lips, swelling in the tongue or throat), confusion and memory problems, unusual tiredness or drowsiness, jaundice, dry skin, unusual weight gain or loss, unusual muscle pain or weakness, swelling, fever, blurred vision, dry mouth, fruity breath, unusual thirst or hunger, upper stomach pain with loss of appetite, nausea, increased urination or an inability to urinate, pain or burning when urinating, dark urine, clay colored stool. Common side effects only need medical attention if they persist or worsen. For Lescol XL, these include insomnia or other sleep problems, cold-like symptoms, headache, mild muscle pain, mild stomach pain, indigestion, nausea, and diarrhea.
What if I forget to take a dose of Lescol XL?
Never take extra medication to make up for a missed dose, so if it's less than 12 hours until your next dose, skip the missed dose. Otherwise, you can take your missed dose as soon as you remember.
How do I store Lescol XL?
Always keep this medication at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (e.g., a bathroom).
What happens if I overdose on Lescol XL?
Call your local poison control center or seek immediate emergency medical assistance if you suspect an overdose.
Warnings
Avoid drinking alcohol while taking Lescol XL, as it will raise triglyceride levels and greatly increase your risk of liver disease or failure. Your doctor will need to do blood tests periodically in order to determine if your dosage needs adjustment. Always keep your lab appointments. Certain medications cannot be taken at the same time as Lescol XL. Do not take the following medications two hours before or after you take a dose: Colestid, Prevalite, Questran.
Brand Names
While there is a generic available for standard Lescol - fluvastatin - there is not a generic option for Lescol XL. That already raises the cost, but there also aren't any other equivalent brands for Lescol XL, meaning the retail price gets even higher.
