Niaspan Information:
What is Niaspan?
Niaspan is an antihyperlipidemic (cholesterol and triglyceride reducing) medication of the Vitamin B class. Besides lowering triglyceride and LDL cholesterol levels, it also helps to raise HDL cholesterol levels. In addition, it may be prescribed to help lower the heart attack risk in those who have already had one and who have high cholesterol. At times, it is prescribed to help treat coronary heart disease. This medication is usually combined with changes to diet and exercise or with other medications or types of treatment.
How do I take Niaspan?
Niaspan is administered in tablet form and taken orally with water or another beverage. It can be taken with or without food. Swallow Niaspan pills whole; do not crush or chew the tablet. Your healthcare provider will determine the frequency of dosing. Your doctor may prescribe diet changes and recommend an exercise program; follow these instructions as they are given. If you are taking other medications, follow your doctor’s directives regarding timing of the dosing schedules.
Before taking Niaspan, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to niacin or any of the ingredients in the Niaspan drug
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements, especially those containing niacin, vitamin B3, or nicotinic acid
- You are taking diabetes medications, anticoagulants, cholesterol medication, HMG-CoA inhibitors, hypertension medication, or bile acid-binding resins
- You have, or have had, diabetes, ulcers, bleeding problems, jaundice, gout, or allergies
- You have, or have had, heart, liver, gallbladder, or kidney disease
- You drink alcohol (including amounts and frequency)
What are the possible side effects of taking Niaspan?
Some individuals have reported Niaspan drug side effects. Less severe side effects include coughing, flushed skin, and diarrhea. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor for help.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include lightheadedness, tachycardia, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, extreme fatigue, malaise, changes to urine color, changes to stool color, unusual muscle pain, unexplained bruising or bleeding, hoarseness, changes in appetite, symptoms of jaundice, pain in the upper right stomach quadrant, feeling like you have the flu, and signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, blisters, itching, difficult breathing or swallowing, or swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, tongue, or the limbs or extremities).
What if I forget to take a dose of Niaspan?
If you forget to take a scheduled dose of Niaspan, do so as soon as you remember and are able unless the time is near for the next scheduled dose. In this case, skip the one missed and resume the normal dosing regimen. Do not take multiple tablets or increase the frequency of dosing to make up for ones missed.
How do I store Niaspan?
Niaspan should be stored in its original container, out of the reach children and away from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused or expired tablets according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
