What is Livalo?
Livalo, together with diet, weight-loss, and exercise, is used to reduce the amount of fatty substances, “bad” cholesterol (LDL) in the blood, while working to increase the amount of “good” cholesterol (HDL). Livalo is a type of medications belonging to the family of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors and works by slowing the production of cholesterol in the body to decrease the amount of cholesterol that may build up on the walls of the arteries. By doing this, Livalo helps to clear blockages of blood flow to the heart, brain, and other parts of the body.
How do I take Livalo?

Typically it is taken once a day with or without food around the same time every day. Livalo should be taken exactly as directed by the prescribing doctor. Your doctor may start you on a low dose of Livalo and gradually increase the dose as needed.
Before taking Livalo, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to Livalo or another any other medications.
- You are taking cyclosporine (ie: Gengraf, Neoral, Sandimmune).
- You are taking any prescription or nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, or herbal products.
- You have you have liver disease.
- You drink large amounts of alcohol, previously had liver disease, or if you have or have ever had seizures, low blood pressure, thyroid or kidney disease.
- You are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.
- You are having surgery.
- You are hospitalized or were recently hospitalized due to serious injury or infection.
What are the possible side effects of taking Livalo?
Serious side effects that require contacting your doctor immediately include: signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, difficulty breathing, swelling the face, lips, tongue, or throat, unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness; fever, unusual tiredness, and dark colored urine; or nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, rash, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, or yellowing of the skin or eyes.
Less serious side effects that should still be addressed with your doctor include: back pain, constipation, diarrhea, memory loss, disorientation, or forgetfulness.
What if I forget to take a dose of Livalo?
If you forget to take a dose of Livalo, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue the regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
How do I store Livalo?
Livalo should remain in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. It should be stored at room temperature and away from light, excess heat and moisture. Discard any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.
What happens if I overdose on Livalo?
If overdose is suspected, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222 or 911 immediately.
Warnings
In rare cases, rhabdomyolysis (a severe breakdown of muscles) and kidney failure have been reported with the use of statins such as Livalo. This reaction appears to be more likely to occur at higher doses. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience muscle pain, weakness, or tenderness, especially if it is accompanied by a fever or feelings of general discomfort.
Livalo, and other statins like it, are known to cause an increase in liver enzymes. It is recommended that liver function be checked with a blood test before starting Livalo and then periodically while taking these types of medication.
