What is Adderall?

Adderall is a combination of the stimulants amphetamine and dextroamphetamine that is used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The combination drug works by restoring the balance of certain natural substances in the brain. Adderall may also be used to treat a certain sleeping disorder such as narcolepsy, by helping users stay alert during the day. 

How do I take Adderall?

  • You have a history of mood or mental problems including: agitation, anxiety, bipolar disorder, depression, psychosis, tension, abnormal thoughts, hallucinations, suicidal thoughts or attempts, or alcohol or other substance abuse or dependence, or if a family member has a history of any of these problems

What are the possible side effects of taking Adderall?

If you experience any of the following unusual side effects after taking adderall, contact your doctor immediately: bladder pain, bloody or cloudy urine, painful urination, increased heart rate, lower back or side pain, cold or flu-like symptoms, coughing or hoarseness, fever or chills, Blistering, peeling, or loosening of the skin, chest pain or discomfort, confusion, convulsions, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, speaking, or swallowing, dizziness, double vision, faintness, headache, loss of control of arms, legs, or facial muscles, itchiness, joint or muscle pain, hive-like swelling on the face, eyelids, lips, tongue, throat, hands, legs, or feet, nausea, irritated eyes, hallucinations, skin rash, slowed speech, sweating unusual tiredness or weakness, vomiting, or wheezing

Other more common side effects to monitor include and discuss with your prescribing doctor include: anxiety, dry mouth, decreased strength, stomach pain, weight loss, constipation, decreased interest in sexual intercourse, unusual sense of well-being, loss in sexual ability, desire, drive, or performance, twitching, twisting, uncontrolled repetitive movements of the tongue, lips, face, arms, or legs.

What if I forget to take a dose of Adderall?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, or if it is already evening. Taking this medicine late in the day can cause sleep problems. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

How do I store Adderall?

Store Adderall at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C). Brief storage at temperatures between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. Store away from heat, light, and moisture. Keep this medicine out of the reach of children and pets.

What happens if I overdose on Adderall?

Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222. An overdose of Adderall can be fatal.

Symptoms of overdose may include: restlessness, tremor, muscle twitches, rapid breathing, confusion, hallucinations, panic, aggressiveness, unexplained muscle pain or tenderness, muscle weakness, fever or flu symptoms, and dark colored urine. These symptoms may be followed by depression and tiredness. Other overdose symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, uneven heartbeats, feeling light-headed, fainting, seizure (convulsions), or coma.

Warnings

This medication can increase blood pressure. If you have high blood pressure, heart failure, or overactive thyroid, or have recently had a heart attack, know that this medication can increase heart rate and blood pressure and can be fatal if taken by individuals with heart conditions.

Adderall, if taken for long period of time, will require regular heart check-ups by your doctor. Note that Adderall can become habit-forming and has the potential for abuse. Using this medication for a prolonged period of time may lead to drug dependence and should only be taken if needed.

Adderall may increase abnormal thoughts and behaviors in people suffering from psychotic conditions, or cause these symptoms to emerge. If taking this drug and the appearance of new or worsening symptoms, including hallucinations, delusional thinking, or aggressive or hostile behavior become prominent, talk to your doctor as soon as possible.

Very rarely, adderall can cause seizures for people who are at risk of seizures. If you have motor tics or phonic tics, Tourette's syndrome, or a family history of Tourette's syndrome, special monitoring may be needed.

Adderall has also been known to affect vision. If you notice any changes in your vision such as blurring, talk to your doctor as soon as possible.

If you are taking any of the following kinds of medication, it is important to talk to your doctor and determine if adderall is safe to use with: acidifying agents, adrenergic blockers, alcohol, alkalinizing agents, antihistamines, antihypertensives, chlorpromazine, ethosuximide, haloperidol, lithium, meperidine methenamine, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, other medications for ADHD, phenobarbital, phenytoin, propoxyphene, sympathomimetics tricyclic, antidepressants, or veratrum alkaloids
