Concerta Information:

What is Concerta?

Concerta is classified as a central nervous stimulant of the amphetamine class. It is prescribed to decrease restlessness and increase attention in those who are afflicted with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and is one facet of a program coordinated with psychological, educational, and sociological therapy. It is believed that methylphenidate blocks the reuptake of dopamine and norepinephrine into presynaptic neurons, and redirects them into extra-neuronal space to promote focus.

How do I take Concerta?

Concerta is taken orally. It is available in tablet form and prescribed for once daily dosage, usually in the morning with liquids. It may be taken with or without food. However, Concerta pills should not be chewed, crushed, or divided. Dosage strength depends on the age and medical profile of the individuals. The typical starting dosage for children six and older is 18 to 54mg/day, while for adults the dosage can range from 18 to as high as 72mg/day. Because of the expense associated with this medication, we recommend using the Concerta coupon found on our website to help with keeping it affordable.

Before taking Concerta, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to methylphenidate, or any ingredients in Concerta.
  • You have glaucoma.
  • You are taking MAO inhibitors, or have taken them within the last two weeks
  • You are taking SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors).
  • You, or anyone in your family, have Tourette’s syndrome.
  • You are being treated for depression.
  • You have a thyroid condition.
  • You have feelings of anxiety, a panic disorder, or periods of agitation.
  • You are taking any medications including blood thinners (such as Warfarin), decongestants, blood pressure medication, seizure medication, anti-depressants, or any vitamins or supplements.
  • You have heart problems, blood circulation conditions, or cardiovascular disease, or there is a family history of heart disease.
  • You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are nursing a child.

What are the possible side effects of taking Concerta?

Some patients taking this medication have reported Concerta side effects. Less severe side effects include changes in appetite; gastro-intestinal problems including heartburn, diarrhea, stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting; restlessness or nervousness; difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep; dizziness; drowsiness; headache; muscle tremors or tightness; and numb, burning, or tingling extremities. If any of these symptoms persist or worsen, contact your health care professional.

Severe Concerta side effects requiring immediate medical attention include arrhythmia, fever, chest pain, rapid heartbeat, symptoms of an allergic reaction (hives, rash, swelling of the mouth, lips, throat, face, difficulty breathing or swallowing), or changes in vision; and extreme agitation or sudden mood swings.

Other severe side effects include painful erections or erections lasting from more than four hours; excessive tiredness or fainting; seizures; hallucinations (visual and aural); depression; slow or labored speech; paranoia; pain or numbness in the extremities; and problems with the fingers and toes including temperature sensitivity, changes in skin color (going from pale to blue to red), weakening, or numbing.

What if I forget to take a dose of Concerta?

If you forget to take your scheduled dose of Concerta, take it as soon as you remember and are able, unless it is within twelve hours of your next dose. In this case, skip the missed dose and resume the normal schedule. Do not take multiple doses to compensate for a missed one.

How do I store Concerta?

Keep Concerta in its original container out of the reach of children. Store it in a cool, dry place away from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused or expired doses according to the instructions of your pharmacist. Because of the potential for abuse, keep track of the number of Concerta pills you have taken in order to detect any unauthorized access.

What happens if I overdose on Concerta?

In the event of an overdose of Concerta, contact the local Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 for Concerta patient assistance. If the individual has lost consciousness or stopped breathing, contact Emergency Services at 911.
