Metadate CD Information:
What is Metadate CD?
Metadate CD contains the central nervous system stimulant methylphenidate, and is prescribed for the treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It works by affecting certain chemicals in the brain (neurotransmitters) that are responsible for impulse control.
How do I take Metadate CD?
Metadate CD is administered in capsule form and is taken orally with water once a day, usually before breakfast. Swallow the capsule whole and do not break, crush, or chew it. If you have difficulty swallowing the capsule, speak to your doctor about an acceptable alternative to administering the medication. Always follow the dosing information provided with this medication.
Before taking Metadate CD, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to methylphenidate or any of the ingredients in the Metadate CD capsule
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are taking, or have taken, MAOIs within the last two weeks
- You are taking SSRIs, anticoagulants, methyldopa, seizure medications, antidepressants; hypertension medications, venlafaxine, or decongestants
- You, or anyone in your family, have been treated for depression, mental illness, bipolar disorder, anxiety, agitation, nervousness, or mania
- You have had thoughts about, or attempted, suicide
- You have, or have had, seizures, or an abnormal EEG
- You, or anyone in your family, have or have had circulation problems in fingers or toes, arrhythmia, heart attack, hypertension, heart disease, blood disorders, or other heart, blood, or circulation problems
- You, or anyone in your family, have or have had Tourette's syndrome, facial, motor, or verbal tics (including stuttering), thyroid problems, glaucoma, or problems with digesting foods containing dairy, sugar, or starch
What are the possible side effects of taking Metadate CD?
Some medications have reported side effects after taking Metadate CD. Less severe side effects include lessening of sexual desire, diarrhea, sleep problems, drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, headache, heartburn, decreased appetite, nausea, muscle tightness, vomiting, restlessness, or nervousness; numb, burning, or tingling feet and hands; stomach pain; or uncontrollable body movement. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact a healthcare professional.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include symptoms of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, blistering, itching, hoarseness, fever, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or swelling of the face, throat, mouth, lips, or tongue), tachycardia or arrhythmia, being abnormally agitated or excited, vision changes, believing things that are not true, chest pain, depression, priapism, extreme fatigue, paranoia, fainting, aural and visual hallucinations, changes in mood, onset of tics or tremors, shortness of breath, seizures, changes to speech patterns, numb, weak, painful or sensitive limbs or extremities, or fingers and toes changing color in a pale/blue/red sequence.
What if I forget to take a dose of Metadate CD?
When a scheduled dose of Metadate CD is missed, the medication should be taken as soon as possible unless the time is near for the next scheduled dose. In this instance, skip the missed one completely and return to the regular dosing schedule. Do not take multiple capsules or increase the frequency at which the medication is taken to make up for one that was missed.
How do I store Metadate CD?
Keep Metadate CD tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children, and away from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused or expired capsules according to the instructions of a pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Metadate CD?
If an overdose of Metadate CD is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of an overdose include agitation, disorientation, dry nose or mouth, tachycardia, fever, flushing, aural and visual hallucinations, headache, euphoria or elation, twitches or tremors, seizures, sweating, vomiting, or dilated pupils.
