What is Quillivant XR?

Quillivant XR is a central nervous stimulant medication containing an extended release version of methylphenidate. It works slowly throughout the day by increasing the availability of the neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine which helps to improve focus and alertness.

How do I take Quillivant XR?

Take Quillivant XR in the mornings with or without food. Taking Quillivant with food or after eating breakfast will help not to ruin appetite. This medication is normally just taken once per day. Shake the bottle well before taking your medication, and be sure to measure it using a cup or device that is meant for measuring medication. Doses vary between 10 and 20mg. Follow your doctor’s instructions for your individual requirements.

What are the possible side effects of taking Quillivant XR?

Possible side effects from taking Quillivant XR include irritability, drowsiness, headache, dry mouth, decreased libido, heartburn, diarrhea, nausea, dizziness, tremors, loss of appetite, and trouble falling asleep or staying awake. If any of these side effects are severe, tell your doctor right away. More serious side effects include uncontrollable movement, chest pain, fast or irregular heartbeat, negative mood changes, overexcitement, seizures, fainting, shortness of breath, hallucinations, changes in vision,  erections that last longer than four hours, slow speech, motor or verbal tics and fever. If you experience any of these side effects, report them to your doctor at once.

• Missed Dose

What if I forget to take a dose of Quillivant XR?

If you miss a dose of Quillivant XR, take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is a few hours before bedtime. In this case, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular regimen the following day. Do not take a double dose of Quillivant XR to compensate for a missed one.

How do I store Quillivant XR?

Store Quillivant XR tightly closed in the container given to you by your pharmacist. This medication should come in the form of a liquid. If it is a powder, return the medication to your pharmacy. Store this medication at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit and keep it out of reach of children and pets.

What happens if I overdose on Quillivant XR?

Signs of overdose on Quillivant XR include vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, agitation, tremors, twitching, convulsions, sweating, euphoria, palpitations, and delirium. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on Quillivant XR, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.  If the victim is unconscious or unresponsive, call 911.

Quillivant XR can be habit-forming. Do not share your medication with anyone else. Giving away or selling Quillivant XR is illegal. Do not suddenly stop taking this medication. Your doctor will slowly decrease your dose over time if you wish to stop taking it.

The generic name for Quillivant XR is methylphenidate ER. There are also other brand names with the same ingredient including Concerta and Ritalin LA.
