Epclusa Information:
Epclusa is a combination medicine containing both sofosbuvir and velpatasvir, antiviral medications that help to prevent the hepatitis C virus (HCV) from multiplying in your body. This medication is used to treat hepatitis C virus of genotypes 1-6. It is often used alongside ribavirin in those with advanced cirrhosis.
Epclusa is most often prescribed to be taken once daily for 12 weeks. Follow your doctor’s directions and those on the prescription label. You may take Epclusa with or without food. While taking this medication, you should remain under a doctor’s supervision and may need frequent blood tests.
Before taking Epclusa, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to either sofosbuvir or velpatasvir
- You have kidney disease or are on dialysis
- You have liver problems other than hepatitis C
- You have HIV (human immunodeficiency virus)
- You have recently used a heart rhythm medication called amiodarone (such as Cordarone or Pacerone)
- You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or currently breastfeeding
Common side effects of this medication include headache, feeling tired, nausea, diarrhea, and problems sleeping (insomnia). You should call your doctor at once if you experience slow heartbeats, weak or shallow breathing, or low red blood cell count, which can lead to pale skin, weakness, rapid heart rate, and trouble concentrating.
If you miss a dose of Epclusa, take it as soon as you remember. You should skip it if it’s close to your next scheduled dosage. Do not take any extra medication to make up for a missed dose.
This medication should be stored in its original container at room temperature away from moisture or heat.
If you think you’ve overdosed on Epclusa, you should immediately seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222.
If you take omeprazole (such as Prilosec), don’t take it for at least four hours after you have had your dose of Epclusa (with food). While this drug treats hepatitis C, it does not prevent you from passing it to other people. Do not have unprotected sex or share needles, razors, or toothbrushes. Your healthcare provider can talk to you about safe ways to prevent HCV transmission during sex. You should never share needles, even when you don’t have hepatitis C.
Epclusa is the brand name for sofosbuvir and velpastasvir in oral tablet form. There is currently no generic version on the market. There is no equivalent medication, but sofosbuvir on its own is available as Sovaldi, and there are combination drugs such as Harvoni. Talk to your doctor about which medication is best to treat your hepatitis C. Because all hepatitis C medications can be expensive, be sure to get a HelpRx coupon or discount card to help control the cost.
