What is Sovaldi?
Sovaldi contains an antiviral medication called sofosbuvir. It works by stopping the replication of hepatitis C virus RNA. Sovaldi is usually prescribed along with ribavirin, another antiviral medication to boost the cure rate. Monotherapy withy Sovaldi is not recommended for patients with chronic hepatitis C.
How do I take Sovaldi?
Sovaldi comes in the form of a 400mg tablet. Sovaldi should be taken once daily at the same time every day, or as per your doctor’s instructions. This medication can be taken with our without food. Your doctor will prescribe another antiviral medication that you will take along with Sovaldi. The type of antiviral(s) and course of treatment will depend on the genotype of hepatitis C that you have and the severity of your condition. Treatment duration is normally 12 or 24 weeks.
Before taking Sovaldi, tell your doctor if:
- You have liver problems besides hepatitis C.
- You have had a liver transplant.
- You have kidney problems.
- You have HIV or another virus.
- You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medications, vitamins or supplements, especially amiodarone, rifampin, other antiviral medications or St. John’s wort.
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Sovaldi.
- You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or you are breastfeeding.
What are the possible side effects of taking Sovaldi?
Common side effects from taking Sovaldi along with other antivirals include fatigue and headache. Nausea, difficulty sleeping, and low red blood cell count may occur if you are also taking peginterferon alfa. If these side effects are severe, tell your doctor. If you experience any serious or unusual side effects such as flu-like symptoms or mood changes, tell your doctor as soon as possible.
What if I forget to take a dose of Sovaldi?
If you forget to take a dose of the Sovaldi drug, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If you have already missed a day, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular regimen. Do not take two doses of Sovaldi in one day.
How do I store Sovaldi?
Store Sovaldi at a temperature below 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep this medication out of reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on Sovaldi?
The highest recorded overdose on Sovaldi in clinical trials 1200mg with no dangerous side effects. The effects of higher doses are not yet known. If you or someone else has accidentally taken a large amount of Sovaldi, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
Warnings
Sovaldi in combination with ribavirin or pegylated interferon can cause birth defects or death of an unborn child. Women will be required to use two forms of birth control while taking this medication.
